5 Steps to Set Up & Start Your Garden

I used to think of myself as someone who didn’t have a green thumb, but once I learned the step-by-step gardening system that I now teach, I realized the problem wasn’t that I didn’t have a green thumb, I hadn’t known where to start.

My time in the garden is now one of the most joyful parts of my day, especially when I share it with my family. It has given me renewed energy and has helped me be more present with my family.

What is a Kitchen Garden & Why Should You Start Gardening?

A Kitchen Garden is a garden where herbs, leafy greens, root crops, fruiting plants & edible flowers are grown for everyday use in the kitchen.

Kitchen gardens are tended regularly and planted seasonally for near year-round harvesting.

You’ll feel inspired to cook when you can step outside your back door and pick the food you grew yourself.

The #1 Key to Garden Success

The #1 key to success in the garden is your setup. When you get the setup right, the rest will follow.

When you follow the steps outlined here, you’ll be calling yourself a gardener before you know it!

STEP 1. Pick your Location

There are four things to consider when picking the location of your garden:

  1. Sunlight
You’ll want to choose the spot that receives the most amount of sun.

  2. Proximity to Water
Be sure the location you choose is close enough to a water source for setting up irrigation for your garden.

  3. Convenience
Your kitchen garden should be easily accessible from your kitchen.

  4. Aesthetics
Your kitchen garden should be something that adds beauty to your yard.

STEP 2. Choose Your Garden Elements & Set Up

There are 5 garden elements to consider when you are planning and designing your garden:

  1. Raised Beds
Raised beds provide ideal growing conditions for your garden and add beauty to your setup.

  2. Trellises
Trellises are important for increasing your growing space by growing vertically, as well as increasing airflow and adding beauty to your garden.

  3. Borders
Borders are an important part of your kitchen garden because they distinguish your garden space from the rest of the landscape.

  4. Pathways
Pathways are important because they invite you into your garden space.

  5. Layout
This is the exciting part! You get to decide how you want your garden layout to be.

STEP 3. Install Your Garden

This is something you can do yourself or hire someone to do. This decision will depend on your budget, the complexity of your garden design, and how much time you have.

I chose to DIY my garden (pictured below). I used brick to designate the space and for stepping stones. I added arch trellises to create entryways to the garden on two ends and added obelisk trellises to each raised bed. This space is more than a garden, it’s a space I created to recharge, to nourish my family, to connect with nature and with my children.
